On May 10, 2012, Once Upon a Time officially got renewed for a second reason[1] which premiered September 30, 2012, Sunday at 7/8c. Despite Emma breaking the curse, which brings everyone's memories back, they are not immediately returned to the fairy tale world. With the introduction of magic by Mr. Gold into Storybrooke, the fates of the two worlds become intertwined, while a portion of the fairy tale world that was relatively spared by the curse is revealed, containing ogres and other mythological creatures that have returned.[2]
Filming for the second season began on July 16, 2012.[3] The show uses locations around Vancouver, British Columbia to shoot the series, as well Bridge Studios for inside sets.[4] Photos from filming can be found here.

Spoilers
Spoilers for specific episodes are found on their respective pages.
- We will find out where Cora keeps her heart, and it will be revealed this season, Edward Kitsis revealed on the official podcast for "The Outsider".[20]
- The show will soon introduce viewers to the angelic queen who gave life to Snow White. "The Snow White story usually begins with the stepmother trying to get rid of her," says executive producer Edward Kitsis, "so we thought it would be fun to explore what Snow's mom was like. Her name is Eva, and she's the person who taught Snow White how to be Snow White." Likely airing in late February and early March, the two-part episode, featuring the return of child dynamo Bailee Madison as Young Snow, will naturally take a dark turn...[21] Executive producer Adam Horowitz confirms that Queen Eva has a "surprising connection to someone else in our world." If your first guess is Cora — since it seems likely that the Evil Queen's evil mother may have had a hand in Queen Eva's death — you may be in for a treat. "That would be a feud that goes back so long," executive producer Edward Kitsis says. But what you may find more interesting? "You would think it would be easy to be Snow White's mother, but perhaps Snow White wasn't always Snow White," Kitsis says.[22] Rena Sofer has been cast in the role.[23]
- The writers explained that the show would definitely be exploring more of the Ogre War and Rumplestiltskin’s experiences in it. “Rumple does not have great memories,” of this war, Edward Kitsis revealed that “it is something we will explore more this season, coming up in the next batch of episodes.”[24] Was there something else underpinning Rumple’s decision to walk away from the horror of war? “I think that that’s an interesting question,” Kitsis responded. “I can say will definitely be explored in an episode this year.”[25]
- In an interview with TV Guide, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed that Neal will arrive in Storybrooke this season, Archie will seek help from Belle, and Regina will be looking for love.[26]
- Regina probably won't be happy when yet another parent appears out of nowhere to vie for Henry's love. "I think she's going to be very surprised when she learns who the father is," Parrilla teased. Might Regina have encountered Neal before? "Possibly," she added, a sly gleam in her eye.[27]
- Rose McGowan has been tapped to guest star playing a younger version of Cora in a flashback.[28]
- Is King George going to be formally arrested for murder? "What happens to King George will be explained when you come back from Christmas break." Edward Kitsis revealed on the official Once Upon a Time podcast for the "Queen of Hearts" episode.
- We will get to see what was in the box August showed Neal in "Tallahassee" sometime in the future.[29]
- When asked if he would be in more than one episode, Jorge Garcia said that "they gave me some hints towards what the Giant’s origin story is, and I think their intention is to tell it at some point and share it with the audience. I just got a call that they're looking to bring me back a month from now, so maybe that'll be the time."[30]
- Rumple's driving force this season will be finding his MIA son, Baelfire. "Everything he's doing to get power is to find and reach him," Carlyle hints. "He's out there somewhere," says Carlyle.[31]
- A casting is being made for a "Jack" with the description: "He's in his 20s or 30s, charismatic, sexy and mysterious, but also loyal and kind, and he's running from his past in a land full of danger." He's a "guest role with option".[32]
- "We are definitely going to tell what happened to Pinocchio." Edward Kitsis told TVLine at Comic-Con. Adam Horowitz added: "We gotta figure out what happened to him. We started the story and we intend to finish it." [33]
- We'll learn why certain parts of fairy tale land — like Snow White's glass coffin — appeared in the real world in the finale.[34]
- "What happened to Baelfire is definitely one of the dangling threads from last season, and I would be disappointed if I had to wait another season to find out,” hinted Edward Kitsis.[35]
- ABC posted a video on their YouTube page with all of the opening sequenes, "including a few clues to the new season". The new opening sequences includes a white horse, two people on horseback, Mulan with a sword, and Aurora touching the spindle of a spinning wheel and collapsing to the ground.[36]
- Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz has said that that Cora is the miller's daughter in the original Rumplestiltskin fairytale, and that Regina was the baby promised to him. They also posed the question "What did Cora do to get out of a deal with a man who usually kills people?" [37]
- Season 2 will "explore the idea of allowing romantic love" to blossom in Emma's life.[38]

- A commercial for the second season can be seen on 666 Park Avenue's first season episode "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?". The scene is set in Times Square where a huge billboard promoting the second season can be seen in the background. 666 Park Avenue airs after Once Upon a Time and Revenge on Sundays on ABC.
